Each month, C&J wants to take you to a different neighborhood in New York City. This April, we’re exploring Greenwich Village and everything this busy neighborhood has to offer. Located centrally in Lower Manhattan, the Village is hip, full of culture, and easily accessible by public transportation from C&J’s bus terminal in Port Authority. Use our interactive walking map of NYC to get around with ease.
If you’re planning a weekend getaway to New York City, consider a walk through Greenwich Village to check out a few of the significant historical landmarks and hot night spots within the neighborhood. Here are just a few of the many activities you and your loved ones can enjoy while there.
Take a College Tour
Greenwich Village is home to several prestigious universities and colleges, so if your kids are nearing the end of high school, this is a great opportunity to tour some colleges. New York University, The New School, and the Pratt Institute all have locations in Greenwich Village. If you happen to walk around NYU’s campus, take a break and stop into Pommes Frites to fuel up on delicious Belgian-style fries topped with your choice of over 30 types of sauces.
People-Watch in the Park
Washington Square Park, in the heart of Greenwich Village, is home to several landmarks including the well-known arch honoring George Washington. Sit and watch artists paint or pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the spring sunshine. If the weather isn’t cooperating, check out Grey Art Gallery that borders the park. This museum-quality art gallery is home to NYU’s collection as well as rotating art exhibits.
Pick Up Some Easter Treats
Are you and the kids craving some sweet treats? Visit the well-loved Magnolia Bakery for a cup of their famous banana pudding or a German chocolate cupcake. When you’re ready to burn off all the sugar, head across the street to Bleecker Playground to let the kids run around and play on the swings.
Listen to Live Jazz Music
Greenwich Village is considered the hub of the American jazz scene. The greatest jazz artists have come here for decades to play in the intimate clubs where you feel as if you’re practically sitting on stage with the band. The Village Vanguard is arguably the most famous club, so make sure to buy tickets ahead of time, because shows here often sell out. Venture a little farther down 7th Avenue and you’ll come upon Mezzrow Jazz Club, which also features great live music in a speakeasy atmosphere. For a post-show dinner, head to Morandi for amazing Italian food (dinner is served until 12 a.m.)!
